Outreach
The Coalition Against Violence conducts workshops throughout the Eastern Avalon region for adults and youth. These workshops have been designed to educate the public on the root causes of violence; they include such topics as: gender inequality; dating violence; elder abuse; bullying, and other related issues. The Coalition collaborates with educators and front-line workers to help ripple out awareness about anti-violence strategies and initiatives. The Coalition participates in various community forums and information sessions to stay current with the latest projects related to violence prevention.
The coordinator is also responsible for arranging Violence Awareness and Action Training (VAAT). This training is a provincial education initiative with an experiential interagency approach to educating governmental and non-governmental representatives on the roots of violence and the related issues for victims of violence. In conjunction with community and government, the Coalition advocates for effective policies that support victims of violence. The Coalition also supports other community-based agencies in advocacy around violence prevention. The coordinator is part of the Community Advisory Committee of the Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI), a conference of the ten other Coalitions in the province. The committee meets regularly to discuss priorities related to violence prevention and to make recommendations on behalf of the community to the VPI Deputy Ministerial Committee.
The Coalition also offers Community Outreach Grants to assist in promoting anti-violence work throughout the Avalon East area. An application form outlining the objectives and criteria is available by contacting the Coalition office.
